THE COST AND REWARD OF EVANGELISM
THEME: EVANGELISM: MY MISSION, YOUR MISSION, OUR MISSION
Evangelism is a noble, heartwarming, fulfilling, rewarding, and glorious Divine-commissioned enterprise after Jesus Christ for building the Church, building Nations, and people for God, establishing them in the Kingdom of God and His Christ on earth for the reign, rule, praise, and glory of God the Father. It is built around the Gospel of Jesus Christ. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3: 16 KJV)
Essentially, evangelism—like the church mission in general—is based on the supreme sacrifice of Jesus Christ on THE CROSS. The cross is the spirit, message, life, direction, and system of conduct of evangelism as church enterprise. It is the spirit, vehicle, and glory of “Go, Preach, Teach, Disciple the Nations”—the Great Commission (cf Matthew 28: 18-20; Acts 1:8). While this mission is great, joyous, and glorious, it comes at a great cost to the church people. But there is a promise of reward along the way as well as at the end.
THE COST OF EVANGELISM
There are three major levels of cost with evangelism: –
A. THE LIFE OF DEATH BASED ON THE CROSS
The cross – signifying sacrificial love, self-sacrifice, spiritual, physical, and emotional agony as spiritual base and mechanism for effectiveness and fulfillment in the soul and with and before Jehovah God. This is the pattern established by Jesus Christ. Death to self is a primary and crucial factor with evangelism and church mission in general (John 12: 23-26; Matthew 16: 23-28). Death to self has many ramifications: –
I. Living a sanctified, righteous, and faithful life of identification with, obedience of, and dependent upon Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.
II. Abandoning self-interest, sacrificing desires, joys, gain, and glory in life for the sake of the Gospel mission just as Jesus did (Philippians 2: 5-11)
III. Loving God and neighbor and perishing world with sacrifice of life, might, and substance—in short, taking all of self-unto evangelism.
IV. Substituting to and depending upon God (Christ Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and the word/voice of God in holy and loving obedience—basis of holiness, righteousness, and faithfulness). Follow Jesus’ example for greater works (John 14:6, 10-12, 21-23) (beware of anti-Christ, false teachings, false pursuits of gain, possessions, power, money, and fame as the essence of faith and church mission). Seeking to glorify Jesus and be where He is in all matters, always unto the end (John 12: 26; Galatians 2: 20)
V. Living a consecrated life: Consecration implies meeting and overcoming the challenges of the self, mind, heart, soul, and body—demands of self-ego
B. There is cost of engagement with Satan—the works of the enemies of God and man and his agents among spirits, men, principalities, and powers.
i. Jesus overcame Satan as well as the challenges of human desires and dictates in the wilderness (Matthew 4:4-11).
ii. Jesus proved humble and obedient in battles with the flesh, sin, and death in the Garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26: 36-46; Luke 22: 41-46).
iii. He rejected the praise and of man (John 6: 15)
C. Meeting the challenges of human enterprise and glory, worldliness, and world order (Ephesians 2: 1-5; Romans 12: 1-3; 1st John 2: 15-19; 1st Timothy 6: 17-21)
THE REWARD OF EVANGELISM
“And behold, I come quickly; and My reward is with Me, to give every man according as his work shall be.” (Revelation 22: 12 KJV)
I. Eternal Life— John 3: 16; 1st John 2: 25
II. The company, presence, works with, and glory with the Master and the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28: 20; John 16: 7-26)
III. Crowns and others
There are three main crowns in Christian service and life
I. Crown of Righteousness – 2nd Timothy 4: 8
II. Crown of Life – James 1: 12; Revelation 2: 10; 22: 14
III. Crown of Glory – 1st Peter 5:4
These apart, we have crown of pure gold (Psalm 21:3; Revelation 4:4); the Spirit of Glory (1st Peter 4: 12-14); also marks, garments, and special names from God (Genesis 17: 5; 32:28; 22:4). There is also Promotion due to faithfulness in service (Matthew 25: 21). Evangelism is a great and wonderful Divine-ordered spiritual mechanism for Creating New Man, Creating New Societies, Creating New World—Great spiritual enterprise with eternal significance.
This is the ultimate end of Christ mission: A New Heaven and A New Earth. Meanwhile, the people of the church will serve as Priests and Kings under Christ’s Reign and Rule of the earth until the end. What a joyful end for the saints who invest spirit, life, heart, mind, might, and substance, as well as human abilities, capacities, achievements, and glory to the Christ cause, mission, and Kingdom on earth.
Go ye is the mission statement of eternal glory. Hallelujah!
