THE HOLY SPIRIT AND SECULAR WORK
NATIONAL HOLY SPIRIT CONFAB ‘87
SEMINAR
THE HOLY SPIRIT AND SECULAR WORK
1987
SYNOPSIS
This message challenges the saints to apply the Holy Spirit’s power and gifts in their
secular careers, conquering the world for Christ’s Kingdom.
INTRODUCTION
As mentioned in the opening talk introducing the theme of the year’s conference, the
main essence of this year’s conference is to discuss and help equip the saint to walk in
the supernatural – to act or do as God through the enabling grace and collaboration with
the Holy Spirit. As saints we are children of God. Created anew in and after Christ – we
found out that the fundamental Divine Nature is Faith, Hope and Love. (1st Cor. 13: 13).
As Peter points out in 2nd Peter 1: 3-8 that certain character traits must manifest or follow
after the new birth……The new man as Paul put in Col 3: 10-11 “And have put on the new
man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: Where there
is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor
free: but Christ is all, and in all.” indicates that when all come to Christ, they manifest a
new culture or behavior pattern after Christ. (Co. 1: 12-17, 3: 12-17).
This is the basis of the New Life hence we are requested to be renewed in our minds,
indeed the spirits of our minds so we not only understand and accept but actually live the
New Life in Christ. The New Life is in fact our new nature in Christ, Faith, Hope and Love
manifest in eternal divine virtues – goodliness, tender mercies, kindness, brother love,
humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering, forgiving spirit etc. the fruit of the Holy
Spirit.
Now the new life or new nature we exhibit must be followed by walking in divine authority
and power. Authority in the name of Jesus Christ, and spiritual authority over all
principalities and powers, dominion and might. Power-exercising supernatural power or
influence over creation i.e. Spiritual, Physical and material and hence social by the gifts
of the Holy Spirit. As we have learnt, the gifts from the Holy Spirit make the redeemed of
the Lord act or do things as God does. We have truly been made anew after True and
Perfect Nature, attributes, authority and power of God. We are now little gods because of
Christ in us. Christ in us is the hope of perfect glory (1st john 3: 1-2, 4;4). This constitutes
part of the mystery which has been hidden from ages but now revealed to the saints (Col
1: 26-28)
OUR INHERITANCE
The mystery of the Divine Nature and Divine Authority and Power, our inheritance in
Christ, the riches of the Glory and hope in Christ, of which we are joint heirs with Christ,
this is it. We become, walk and work exactly as Christ.
• Yet in His name – because He is exalted by the Father above all principalities,
because He has gone back to the Father and all authority is given Him.
• By the enabling grace of the Holy Spirit who has come to abide with us and make
this new position of the saints a reality in Christ, we have become divine, by the
Holy Spirit, we can walk and work as Divine beings. Hallelujah!
• The Nature of Man. From the foregoing, we can appreciate that the saint is not an
ordinary person. This is the whole essence of the Resurrection Power in us that
makes the redeemed walk outside and beyond the infirmities, weakness and
constraints of the natural corruptible man, the first Adam.
The truth is that man is weak, infirm, corruptible, mortal, and imperfect. He is not perfect
in Knowledge, Wisdom and Strength. He cannot see through time and space. He does
not know and cannot gather all facts regarding issues. He the redeemed sees but darkly
as in a mirror, yet not so perfect but mortal man is in fact Living In Darkness of Ignorance
and the shadow of death in infirmities and under the control of the power of darkness.
Mortal man is weak, at the mercy of death anytime. Without God, without hope.
THE SAINT OF THE WORLD
It is in this respect that the saint can make all the differences in the world by virtue of his
new nature, authority and power. By the working power of the Resurrection Power on his
life – on his spiritual and physical being changing his whole personality and above all (i)
by his access to creative word of God (ii) by his relationship with the Holy Spirit –
Omniscient, Omnipresent, Omnipotent as God – who can and does anoint with
supernatural (divine) powers and who also accompanies or as partners of the saint in his
confrontation with issues of life and (iii) by his access through Jesus Christ the Father,
the ultimate and final authority and power.
All these put together make the Christian, the saint a supernatural person. The saint then
is a giant on the human and world scene-a new species of spirit-beings in the perfect
image of God. They can confront spirits, they can move beyond the natural abilities, they
can overcome natural weakness and infirmities, they can and does have influence over
the physical and material, they have direct access to God so they can cause things to
happen beyond what they can think or imagine or dream about and above all they have
the Holy Spirit the Spirit of creation with them.
Here the saint is sent and in indeed sent out into the world to witness of Christ and build
the Kingdom of God. We will not discuss here the details of witnessing of Christ and
Building of The Kingdom of God. Suffice to mention, the changed personality, the witness
by utterance, ministering as priests, people, taking up intermediary and intercessionary
position in society, confronting all issues in human life in the knowledge, wisdom; and
power of God and establishing peace, righteousness and justice in society, making all
things new in Christ for the glory of God.
THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE SAINT IN SECULAR WORK
From the above, it is apparent that the saint is sent out into the world for divine purposes.
The fact is also that the saint has been separated from the world. Being so, he is not only
no more on his own, he is not only to separate himself from the world system, analyzing
issues in the knowledge, wisdom, understanding (or light) of God, he is also to confront
issues or undertake his tasks as a new spirit-being, a spiritual and not a carnal person.
Being partly carnal, not fully knowledgeable, wise and strong – he is on the needs and will
always need the Holy Spirit to undulate his tasks as a Witness of Christ and Builder of the
Kingdom of God, as light and salt in society above all as a supernatural person, that he
now is. For this cause, the Holy Spirit has come and is abiding with us. Come (not just to
speak and sing in tongues and part one another in the church and embrace in the public).
We are soldiers out there. We are also ambassadors of Christ. We are God’s people, God
inheritance among men. We are the people of God. In our daily tasks therefore, we are
not merely to demonstrate our riches in Christ, we are to consciously bring out authority
and powers in the solution of human problems, after all we are now supernatural beings
but not so. We are sent out there to prove and demonstrate Christ and to bring Hope to
mankind (consider Is. 60: 1-3, 7). Of course, we are not doing this because we want
promotion, wealth, or fame that will be materialism and selfish not the Divine Nature of
Love, Compassion and.
The creative powers of the Holy Spirit, the supernatural powers of wisdom and the spirits
of wisdom, knowledge, understanding, discernment, faith, prayer etc. can help solve
human problems particularly in decision makings
WHAT IS THE…….
➢ Walking in the Spirit not for holiness or perfection as such (1st Cor. 12:7) but in
partnership for daily tasks, exercising the gifts of the Spirit on the job.
➢ Waiting upon the Holy Spirit – sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. Acts 15: 25-28, 1st Cor.
8: 40
➢ Praying and Asking for Revelation, guidance and direction. Ask for wisdom (James
1: 5-6)
What we are suggesting then is that the gifts of the Holy Spirit and our whole standing as
Christians or saints should be reviewed not alone in the edification of the church and
evangelistic outreach but in the totality of Christian witness in demonstrating the love and
power of God and building the Kingdom of God.
Ye are the light and salt in the world – light of wisdom, knowledge, power to guide, lead
and bring progress, salt and heal, in the solution of problems and bringing peace,
righteousness and justice as we stated in the introductory talk the mission of the Holy
Spirit in the world in human affairs is the mission of the church. The mission of the church
is the mission of the saints in the world. The mission field of the Holy Spirit, the church
and hence the saint is the world. The church’s partner and superintendent is the Holy
Spirit. The final objective to save and redeem men, to bring all things under captivity to
God, to Christ, to change the whole world situation making CHRIST LORD of Lord’s and
King of kings and bringing all kingdoms under God and Christ. The world is the territory
not the church alone.
Go out and witness, serving God: Serving man!
