NATIONAL HOLY SPIRIT
CONFERENCE
“THE HOLY SPIRIT IN ACTION
THE CHURCH AND HER MISSION
BRO. ENOCH AGBOZO- 1985
SYNOPSIS
This message defines the Church as
Christ’s body, sent out to proclaim
salvation, disciple men, and establish
God’s Kingdom on earth.
PREAMBLE
• Greetings in Christ
• Thanks, and praise to the Living
God for the wonderful teaching
•
sessions. It has been a glorious
experience. Glory be to God
• This evening, we come to a new
dimension of the Conference, the
demonstration of the Holy Spirit
in Action – to save, heal, deliver,
to fill in Baptism and anoint with
divine graces, equipping the saint
for the ministry.
• Tonight, and tomorrow, an open
door for special blessings – the
meeting of needs – for the saved
and unsaved, the minister of
minds and receptivity for the
demonstration of Spirit and
Power.
As is usually the case, before ministering
to the needs of the church, there would
be a word of extortion to give
understanding and build up faith
preparing hearts and minds for the
blessings. For the purposes of the
conference, particularly in reference to
the equipping and strengthening of men
for the ministry, we are required to speak
on the topic The Church and Her Mission
before ministering. As we all know, the
church is the called-out ones,
regenerated and sanctified by the Spirit
and the Blood of Jesus Christ and sent
back into the world to witness of Christ,
to proclaim the Good News of Salvation,
disciple men and build the Kingdom of
God. The church is the body of Christ,
the people in whom dwells the Spirit of
Christ and who have been sent out into
the world as ambassadors of Christ with
the word of reconciliation, to establish
the Kingdom of God, so there be peace
on earth. Taking a cue from the theme of
the conference, therefore we can say
that the church has been sent out to;
WITNESS OF CHRIST: To witness of
Christ means: –
• To testify of the Person and Work
of Christ. His Deity, His
Incarnation, His Crucifixion,
Death and Resurrection and
Glorification. To teach men about
Christ Jesus and all He stands for.
• To Proclaim the Good News of the
Redemptive work of Christ so
men be saved, delivered, healed
and blessed with the abundant
life…. That is, to declare the love
and power of God to save and give
life. For God so love the
world……John 3:16. This is our
message
• To Glorify Christ – by not only
proclaiming His exalted position
sitting on the right hand of God
and given a name, power and
authority above every name,
power, principality, dominion etc.
and also by moving in the name of
Jesus Christ to set the captives
free, to release prisoners, to fill
men with joy, peace and hope, to
destroy the works of the devil, to
show His power over nature and
all.
• To build the Kingdom of God and
His Christ – that is, to unseat
Satan from his throne of
dominion over men and creation
and from his self-proclaimed
exalted positions, thereby
subjecting all things, kingdoms,
dominions, powers,
principalities, mankind and
nature under CHRIST as CHRIST
be proclaimed King of kings and
Lord of lords, all under God who is
all in all.
Consider Isaiah 9: 6-7
“Of the increase of his government and
peace there shall be no end, upon the
throne of David and upon His kingdom,
to order it, and to establish it with
judgment and with justice from
henceforth even forever. The zeal of the
Lord of host will perform this.” Verse 7
Rev. 11: 15. “And the seventh angel
sounded; and there were great voices in
heaven, saying, the kingdoms of this
world are become the kingdoms of our
Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall
reign for ever and ever.”
Consider also Rom. 16: 25-27; Acts 28:
30-31
As we learnt yesterday and will be
repeated throughout this Conference it
is for this cause the Holy Spirit has come,
to endue the church with power for
witness. We have not just been
redeemed from sin, death and
Satan……to enjoy ‘good’ life here,
waiting for the day of fulfillment or Day of
Redemption, the seed of the divine one,
has been put in us……We have become
partakers of the divine nature. By both
the new birth and the Holy Spirit
anointing that comes upon us as
believers, sons and daughters and
servants of the Living God, we are not
only new spirit-beings, we have moved
from the human to the divine, from the
earthly to the heavenly, from the
weaknesses and frailties of the flesh,
human spirit, mind and body, to divine
power of life………….living waters flow
out of our belies…..love and divine
knowledge, wisdom, understanding
(omniscience) divine creative force
through His word (omnipotence) and
divine presence everywhere
(omnipresence)………..through the gift of
prophecy, revelation and wisdom, we
can defy time and space.
Through the gift of healing, faith and
miracles, we can have power over nature
and the elements; we can heal the sick,
raise the dead, stop the mouths of lions,
walk through fire and space, cause the
earth from rotating. And most
interesting, through the gift of tongues
and even ordinary human language we
can speak to holy angels and demons
alike and they will obey. But above all, we
have fellowship with God, and we can
make God do things beyond all we can
ask for or imagine. (Even the human
mind can be renewed, expanded,
extended and in faith work in
supernatural realms). We have the mind
of Christ. Hallelujah! God will is to do
according to His pleasure in us.
Hallelujah! “Wompe wei-a, wope den”
Beloved, the mystery is that we have
come into a covenant relationship with
God through Christ, whose blood has
been used to seal the covenant so both
we in Christ and God can do things for
the praise and glory of His name. in
Christ, the church is exalted above all
principalities and power and might and
dominion and every name that is named,
not only in this world, but also in the
world to come. (Eph. 1: 17-23).
“That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the Father of glory, may give unto you
the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the
knowledge of him: The eyes of your
understanding being enlightened; that
ye may know what is the hope of his
calling, and what the riches of the glory
of his inheritance in the saints. And what
is the exceeding greatness of his power
to us-ward who believe, according to
the working of his mighty power, Which
he wrought in Christ, when he raised
him from the dead, and set him at his
own right hand in the heavenly places,
Far above all principality, and power,
and might, and dominion, and every
name that is named, not only in this
world, but also in that which is to come:
And hath put all things under his feet,
and gave him to be the head over all
things to the church, Which is his body,
the fulness of him that filleth all in all.”
There is a mystery in the covenant, that
is the fellowship we have with God in
Christ. We are not only sitting in heavenly
places in Him, as joint heirs, we have
given position of authority, power and
mission whereby through the church
God will reveal His mysteries both to
men, and even principalities and powers
in heavenly places. (Eph. 3: 9-16). There
are unsearchable riches in Christ.
“And to make all men see what is the
fellowship of the mystery, which from the
beginning of the world hath been hid in
God, who created all things by Jesus
Christ: To the intent that now unto the
principalities and powers in heavenly
places might be known by the church the
manifold wisdom of God. According to
the eternal purpose which he purposed
in Christ Jesus our Lord: In whom we
have boldness and access with
confidence by the faith of him.
Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my
tribulations for you, which is your glory.
For this cause I bow my knees unto the
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, of whom
the whole family in heaven and earth is
named, that he would grant you,
according to the riches of his glory, to be
strengthened with might by his Spirit in
the inner man;”.
Thus, as we would have realized by now
in this conference, the major areas of
operation by the Holy Spirit in the
church’s mission is first, LOVE……. That
divine nature or essence which was
given eloquent proof at Calvary and
which we are expected to demonstrate
as fruity or evidence of the New Birth or
Presence of the Holy Spirit in or Jesus
Christ dwelling in us. Second is
POWER……divine or supernatural
abilities that become implanted in the
spirit or stem of the believer – abilities
that enable the believer in Christ and
servant of God, filled with the Holy Spirit
to have control, authority and influence
over things, ability to produce desirable
natural and supernatural.
The church is on a mission of love and
power of God…… to save, heal, deliver,
regenerate, transform, love, move upon
to receive peace, joy, power and
blessings of spiritual physical and
material nature, and establish a New
Social Order. The Holy Spirit has come to
grant these graces and superintend the
church on this mission.
What we cannot help emphasizing in this
conference is that both the Old and New
Testament confirm that leadership of
God’s people whatever the area in
society requires special endowment of
power and graces from the Holy Spirit.
This was evident with prophet/political
leaders like Moses, Joshua, David and
the Judges. There are divine possibilities
for administration through the filling of
the Holy Spirit – Solomon had wisdom,
so also Stephen and the first deacons of
the church (Acts 6: 3-6).
“Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among
you seven men of honest report, full of
the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we
may appoint over this business. But we
will give ourselves continually to prayer,
and to the ministry of the word. And the
saying pleased the whole multitude: and
they chose Stephen, a man full of faith
and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and
Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and
Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of
Antioch:
Whom they set before the apostles: and
when they had prayed, they laid their
hands on them.”
The men of old needed the Holy Spirit not
so much because they were unwise or
unskilled though they were, it is primarily
because God know, and they also knew
and agreed with God that would not carry
out the onerous tasks required of them in
a way pleasing to God. Solomon asked
for wisdom precisely for this reason.
It requires humility in spirit. It is pride,
unbelief and the deceitful working of the
devil, Satan, that make men believe that
they can do God’s work or rule nations
with the wisdom of man. Of course, we
may achieve by human methods, and
receive human approbation but all in
nothing, indeed foolishness before God.
That is why God says He will confound
the worldly wise and catch them in their
own wisdom.
One last point…………………The church
should not shy away from social
responsibilities, as if the church’s only
mission is spiritual or the priestly role. If
the church will take up her prophetic
role in society, it should be
accompanied by a corresponding social
concern. However, we need to
distinguish the church as an
organization commanding resources
from the church as individuals’ citizens
within the nations.
As individuals, we bear the mark and
message of Christ. We should therefore
perform our individual task and use our
natural as well as divine, abilities and
physical and material resources to life
burdens to save the poor and needy, to
help establish a new social order after
Christ.
As organization(s), the church’s role in
society is primarily priestly (salt) and
prophetic (light). However, the church is
in a position to take social measures on
corrective and supplemental bases. The
Mission of the Church is to evangelize,
disciple, build the Kingdom, and where
necessary provide for the poor and
needy. The church is on a Mission of Love
and Power…….to save, redeem and
grant life and liberty to men and to help
establish a new social order of peace,
righteousness and justice.
The church is under command to preach
and build the Kingdom of God. The
Kingdom has spiritual as well as social
dimensions.
As bearers of truth and light, the church
has a divine duty towards society and the
world at large. Christ came to take away
the sins of the world. As regenerated,
knowledgeable citizens. Christianity has
spiritual and social responsibility for the
affairs of the nation. As chosen servants
of God, Christians have an account to
give at the end of their tenure here on
earth.
The Ghana situation therefore needs a
social as well as spiritual analysis. As
Christians, we would naturally be mainly
concerned with the spiritual and moral
dimension of social conduct. The Bible
teaches “except the Lord build the
house, they labour in vain that build it;
except the Lord keep the city, the
watchmen watch in vain.” If therefore
Ghana is failing to build a viable and
progressive state, there should be
spiritual and moral explanation. The
church is under obligation therefore not
only to examine the spiritual basis of our
national life, but also to take such
measures as to bring our spiritual and
social life in harmony with God’s perfect
will so there be peace and confronting
progress.
The prophetic-priestly role of the church
demands not only a clear
knowledgeable of God’s will and
movement of His Spirit, not only of the
nature and dynamics of the battle of life
for spiritual and moral purity and social
righteousness, but also preparedness to
undergo the sacrifices required in this
life for God’s glory to truly manifest.
(John 12: 23-25).
“And Jesus answered them, saying, the
hour is come, that the Son of man should
be glorified. Verily, verily, I say unto you,
except a corn of wheat fall into the
ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it
die, it bringeth forth much fruit. He that
loveth his life shall lose it; and he that
hateth his life in this world shall keep it
unto life eternal.”
We have been called, chosen and sent
out to exalt the Lord as He will draw men
unto Himself. So, He will build His
Kingdom through us.
Often, in the discharge of this mission,
men misunderstand us, misinterpret our
intentions, misrepresent us, condemns
us and even kill us…. As they did the
Lord. John 12: 19 throw light on some of
the reasons why we meet such criticism
and condemnation.
“The Pharisees therefore said among
themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail
nothing? behold, the world is gone after
him.” John 12:9
It is for this cause we are called, to glorify
the Lord. We cannot turn back.
“Now is the judgement of this world now
shall the prince of this world be cast
out.” John 12:31
“And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will
draw all men unto me”
John 12:32
There is glory and joy and crown ahead.
CHURCH OF GOD, LET US GLORIFY
THE LORD.
