SYMPOSIUM ON THE GIFT OF TONGUES
(1st – 4th September 1993)

SYNOPSIS
This symposium establishes the Gift of Tongues as essential for spiritual warfare,
personal edification, and fulfilling the Church’s mission.

The Gift of Tongues has been established by God for a number of purposes, chiefly
For the edification of the church – prophecy/tongues interpretation (1st Cor. 14:3)
For the works of the ministry – preaching, prayer of intercession/spiritual warfare
For personal edification of the believer – supplications (Rom. 8: 26; Eph 6: 18),
building up faith (Jude 1:20)
Tongues speaking – key to the spiritual system
Learning to submit one’s will, spirit and minds and frailties to the Holy Spirit
Establishing a basis of co-operation with the Holy Spirit
The spirit of man, the spirit of God in joint-action
The Holy Spirit, the spirit of man can initiate action. However, the operation is still in the
spiritual realm. Language not always known, one from the speaker angel BUT KNOWN
TO THE HOLY SPIRIT and Hearers whether spirits or men where the Holy Spirit wants
edification of the speaker or the church. Known language (prophecy) or unknown
language interpreted orally and explained in the spirit to the conscience level through
enquiry with the Holy Spirit.

The systems unbelief, doubt, fear, pride, self-confidence, spiritual arrogance
But unbelief can be broken down by speaking in tongues or prophecy 1st Cor. 14:
22-25
Problem of order in the church – congregational prayer, personal use of selfedification, honour the sacred things, no sacrilege but strictly speaking no
manipulation of the Holy Spirit.
CONCLUSION
Tongues speaking is gift or grace of God multiple use in the church’s life, church’s
mission and individual lives. No doubt nor insult of God’s wisdom. No fear. Be not
discouraged or dismayed by the skeptics and unlearned. Hold the gift with reverence but
appropriate it to the outmost. Observe rules and conduct in the church and decency in
public. Build your knowledge and faith and powers and walk with the Holy Spirit.
But give not up prophecy nor speaking in tongues. Let no one persuade you to discard.
Pray always, make your supplication in the spirit. Build up your faith with prayer in the
Holy Ghost but on the whole put on the Armour of God, discharge your duties to the
excellence of your ability.
