SERMON INSIGHTS

The Trial of Faith and Manifold Temptations

Central Spiritual Truth: The challenges and tribulations of this life are not signs of defeat, but a precious process used by God to refine the believer’s faith for eternal honor.

  • Recognize that even as children of God, you are called to go through “manifold temptations” and various challenges. These trials serve a divine purpose to ensure that your faith is found unto “praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ”.
  • The trial of your faith is described as being “much more precious than of gold that perisheth,” highlighting its eternal value over worldly wealth. While gold is refined by fire, your spiritual endurance is refined through the pressures of this current world.
  • Understand that being in the flesh involves a “mystery” where you are simultaneously a child of God and a person facing material struggles. You must maintain your hope of glory even when physical conditions and difficulties seem to contradict your heavenly status.
  • The process of transformation requires a “spirit of patience” to wait until the spiritual reality is fully manifested. You must not let the confusion or tribulations of the end times cause you to lose sight of the “glorious end of sonship”.
  • Patience is not merely passive waiting, but a steadfastness that keeps you from pursuing or prolonging your interests in this temporary world. This endurance ensures that you will eventually receive the reward promised to faithful servants of the Most High.

The Power of the Indwelling Spirit

Central Spiritual Truth: The Holy Spirit is the active agent of transformation that changes the believer’s nature from “normal natural” to “divine heavenly”.

  • The mechanism of this godly life is “Christ in you, the hope of glory,” which functions through the baptism and presence of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit comes upon you to impart a “spirit of power and life” that distinguishes you from ordinary human beings.
  • The Holy Spirit works to change and transform your life, enabling you to walk in “light, power, and glory” even while remaining in the flesh. This shift takes you out of your natural limitations and into a “divine, heavenly nature”.
  • Through the Spirit, you are given a “new mind, new understanding, new power, and new glory” to navigate the world. This internal renewal is what allows you to prove you are a “new people” who no longer walk according to human wisdom.
  • The Spirit of God acts as a guide, leading you into a true “revelation of God” and the knowledge of His Son. This spiritual leading is the only way to experience “eternal life,” which is to know the only true God.
  • When you obey the commandments of Christ, He manifests Himself to you and introduces you to the Father through the Spirit’s power. This divine relationship makes it so that when others see you, they actually see the Father and Jesus Christ.

 Partaking of the Divine Nature

Central Spiritual Truth: God has provided all things necessary for life and godliness, allowing believers to escape worldly corruption and share in His own nature.

  • His divine power has already given unto us “all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue”. This provision is not for earthly riches but for the attainment of a “high, heavenly calling”.
  • By these “great and precious promises,” you are enabled to be “partakers of the divine nature”. This participation in God’s nature is the result of having “escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust”.
  • You are “sanctified by the Spirit through the truth,” which cleanses the old sinful nature through the “sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ”. This sanctification is a fundamental part of the new life that prepares you for your heavenly inheritance.
  • The new life is described as being “begotten again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead”. This resurrection power lifts you out of being “dead in sins and trespasses” and into a state of “Risen Glory”.
  • You are “kept by the power of God through faith” for an inheritance that is “incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away”. This inheritance is specifically “reserved in heaven for you,” far beyond the reach of earthly decay.

The Determination of the New Life

Central Spiritual Truth: The transition to a “glory life” changes a believer’s priorities from material considerations to divine purposes.

  • This new life radically changes your “determination,” meaning you no longer base your life choices on “economic or material considerations”. Decisions regarding jobs, pay, or spouses are now filtered through where God wants you to be in His “divine purposes”.
  • While the world seeks after “what you shall eat or wear,” you are exhorted to “set your affections on things above”. Seeking these mundane things is the way of the “pagans” and distracts from the “fullness of divine glory”.
  • You must “labor not for the meat which perisheth,” but focus your energy on the “meat which endureth unto everlasting life”. This spiritual sustenance is what the Son of man gives to those who believe in Him.
  • The “glory” you are called to is not defined by “human understanding, expectation, or perception”. It is a glory that God understands and confers upon those who have been “transformed on the inside to be like Jesus Christ”.
  • Being a “child and servant” of the Lord carries a “royal priesthood” status that gives you victory over “sin, death, Satan, and diseases”. This status is a “new spiritual status and a new nature” that you must consciously live out every day.

EXHORTATIONS AND CALLS TO ACTION

  • Search Yourself: You are called to “search herself [the church]” to ensure you are “actually in the faith” and not drifting toward an earthly agenda.
  • Cherish the Calling: You must “cherish and stand by this high calling” even when facing “challenging times, confusion, and tribulations”.
  • Control the Body: You are exhorted to “control the body” and avoid prolonging your interests in this world to reach the “glorious end of sonship”.
  • Set Affections Above: Stop focusing on the “problems and mundane things of this world” and instead “set your affections on things above”.

PRAYER “May the Lord give us understanding and the spirit of patience to wait until reality.

Amen
